The Technology Behind Flight Search
When you query a flight search engine, it aggregates data across multiple GDS platforms (Amadeus, Sabre, Travelport) and direct airline New Distribution Capability (NDC) APIs. Because searching millions of flight combinations in real time is computationally expensive, data is frequently cached.
Understanding Airline Fare Buckets
A plane with 180 seats does not have a single price. Airlines divide the cabin into 10-15 different fare buckets (represented by letters like Q, M, V, Y). The cheapest 15 seats are sold first; once depleted, the price automatically steps up to the next bracket.
How to Capitalize on Fare Buckets
If you are booking for a family of 4, but only 2 seats remain in the lowest fare bucket, many booking engines will price all 4 tickets at the higher bucket! Try searching for 1 passenger first to check the baseline price, then split your reservation if necessary.
